Photographer Jo Coates leads you through a simple photography framing taster workshop, aimed at children 6 years and over. The workshop will help you think about choosing a subject and basic framing and composition for taking photographs or drawings. Download the Student Pack and use it alongside watching Jo's video which explains the activity.
The workshop has been created to accompany the Portrait of a Town photography exhibition to be held at The Granary Gallery, Berwick-upon-Tweed during 2021 and has been supported by Northumberland Arts Development.

Creating a Photo Story student pack
Tips for taking a good photograph
Photographer Jo Coates leads you through our next photography workshop, aimed at children 6 to 13 years old.
The workshop will help you think about how to take a set of photographs that tell a story. Read the presentation and watch the video which shows Jo visiting places in Berwick-upon-Tweed, discussing what to consider when taking good photographs. The Tips Handout can be used by teachers to support younger pupils or can be used by older pupils themselves; it offers tips on what to consider when taking a good photograph.

Work and Play Schools Photographic Competition
Deadline: Friday 9 July 2021
The Competition is open to all schools in North Northumberland with the theme of Work and Play. The two photography workshops above give pupils guidance on taking photographs and creating a photo story. The entries must contain 5 photographs and there are two age categories:
Up to and including Year 4
Years 5 to Years 8
Schools can submit up to 3 entries from each class which will be judged by professional photographers, Jo Coates and Cameron Robertson. Winning entries and a selection of others will be on view in The Granary Gallery over the weekend 18 – 19 September as part of Berwick Heritage Open Days. They will also be archived and kept permanently in the Berwick Record Office. Winning pupils will also receive vouchers as prizes.
